PURPOSE:
To introduce an ordinance to amend City Code Section §2.12.090 regarding the primary and general election dates.
BACKGROUND:
On February 9, 2024, the Governor signed House Bill 2785 changing the date of the primary election from August 6, 2024, to July 30, 2024.
The bill became effective immediately on February 9, 2024, and requires amendments to Lake Havasu City Code Section §2.12.090, Elections - Scheduling, to align with the State Statutes regarding the primary and general election dates.
Staff is proposing the following amendments:
§ 2.12.090 ELECTIONS-SCHEDULING.
A. Beginning in 2020, the city’s primary election shall be held and conducted on the first Tuesday in August.
B. Beginning in 1998, the city’s general election shall, if necessary, be held and conducted on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
THE CITY’S PRIMARY ELECTION AND GENERAL ELECTION, IF NECESSARY, SHALL BE HELD AND CONDUCTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH STATE LAW.
Staff recommends introduction of this ordinance.
