COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

TO:                                          Honorable Mayor and Council

FROM:                     Mike Keane, Parks and Recreation Manager

SUBJECT:Title

Approve a Renewable Energy Credit Purchase Agreement and Short Form Interconnection Agreement with UniSource Energy Services for the Donation of a Solar Shade Structure for Use at Mesquite Park (Mike Keane)

Body

FUNDING SOURCE:

N/A

PURPOSE:

To approve agreements with UniSource Energy Services for the donation of a solar shade structure for use at Mesquite Park.

BACKGROUND:

UniSource Energy Services (Unisource) would like to donate a solar shade structure to Lake Havasu City for its use at Mesquite Park located at 2140 Mesquite Avenue. The proposed shade structure is anticipated to provide a community gathering at the current splash pad/playground, allowing families to take cover from the heat. UniSource’s donation represents continuing commitment to develop and encourage the use of renewable energy resources in our community. The solar would help offset some energy costs to the facility. UniSource would assume the cost to install the solar system and shade structure.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

The community will be able to enjoy Mesquite Park more with the donation of a shade structure topped with solar panels from UniSource Energy Services.  The shade structure will allow for a place for individuals to get out of the sun while other members of their party are utilizing the spray park or the playground. The Public Works Department will install picnic tables under the structure to allow for seating and gathering space.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Electrical savings of $800-$1000/year or approximately 80% of electricity utilized currently at Mesquite Park.
