PURPOSE:
To obtain the City Council’s approval to use contingency funds (available in the General Fund) for contracted legal services.
BACKGROUND:
The majority of the City’s claims and litigation are handled by the City’s insurance carrier. However, there are certain types of matters where insurance coverage is not available and in those instances the City Attorney’s office handles those matters.
To date, there has been a higher than usual need to use contracted legal services through the City Attorney’s office. Therefore, the use of contingency funds is necessary to cover contracted legal services exceeding what is budgeted in the Fiscal Year 2018-19 budget for such services.
COMMUNITY IMPACT:
Providing the tools and resources necessary to protect the City’s legal interests.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Up to $50,000 from General Fund Contingency.
