COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

TO:                                          Honorable Mayor and Council

FROM:                     Brian Davis, Fire Chief

SUBJECT:Title

Adopt Resolution No. 18-3263 Ratifying the Submission of a Grant Application with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for the 2018 Wildland Fire Hazardous Fuels Grant Program (Brian Davis)

Body

FUNDING SOURCE:

Grant

PURPOSE:

Ratify the submission of a grant application with the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for Wildland Fire Hazardous Fuels Grant Program.

BACKGROUND:

The 2018 Wildland Fire Hazardous Fuels Grant Program is a risk reduction program administered by the US Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management through the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.  The Wildland Fire Hazardous Fuels Grant focuses on mitigation of fire risk and community protection through the reduction of hazardous fuels.  Submission of the original grant application occurred in May following the Body Beach incident, due to an immediate deadline.  The project has been further evaluated and staff recommends that we proceed if the grant is awarded.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management grant funding would allow Lake Havasu City Public Works crews to manage additional shoreline vegetation consisting of trimming, removing, and/or burning nuisance vegetation along the shoreline of Lake Havasu.  The grant area would be located between Body Beach and Contact Point to minimize the hazard near heavily used areas and the significant boating assets located at Contact Point.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Grant funds in the amount of $83,383.47, with an in-kind match of $9,264.83.
