FUNDING SOURCE:
General Fund
PURPOSE:
To consider approval of a Partnership Agreement with the Lake Havasu Detachment 757, Marine Corps League, Inc., to publicly display a donated piece of the U.S.S. Arizona.
BACKGROUND:
In 1995, Congress authorized the Department of the Navy to donate pieces of the U.S.S. Arizona to qualifying veteran and education organizations to preserve the ship’s legacy and the memory of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Lake Havasu Detachment 757, Marine Corps League (Marine Corps) applied for and received a donated piece of the U.S.S. Arizona (relic). The relic is a 4-foot by 6-foot piece of the aft deck house of the U.S.S. Arizona and weighs 520 pounds. The Marine Corps wishes to partner with the City to publicly display the relic in London Bridge Beach Park.
Under the proposed Partnership Agreement, the City allows the construction of the enclosure for the display of the relic and agrees to maintain the enclosure after it is constructed.
COMMUNITY IMPACT:
The relic serves to honor and remember the 1,177 sailors and marines who died on the U.S.S. Arizona during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Future maintenance costs associated with the enclosure constructed to display the relic.
ATTACHMENTS:
Partnership Agreement
SUGGESTED MOTION:Recommended Action
I move to approve the Partnership Agreement with the Lake Havasu Detachment 757, Marine Corps League, Inc., to publicly display a donated piece of the U.S.S. Arizona.
