PURPOSE:
To consider adopting a resolution approving the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the University of Arizona to participate in Project WET and the annual Water Festival.
BACKGROUND:
For the last 10 years, Lake Havasu City has hosted and participated in the annual Water Festival produced by the University of Arizona through Project WET. This program is targeted at 4th graders throughout the state. Within the program, educational components are completed in the classroom as well as a field day engaging on critical water resources topics. Students learn about the importance of water conservation, the role of groundwater, and the water cycle. Each year between 300-600 students participate in the event and benefit from this focus on water.
Approval of this agreement will allow the City to continue working with the University of Arizona teaching the importance of water resources and the basics of the water cycle to our youth.
COMMUNITY IMPACT:
Increased education and awareness on important water resources topics for both students and teachers throughout the City.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Funds are allocated and available in the annual operating budget of the Water Utility Fund. The annual amount for this event has historically been less than $10,000. For Fiscal Year 2024-25, the cost of the event was $8,115.
