COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

TO:                                          Honorable Mayor and Council

FROM:                     Jason Hart, Capital Program Manager

SUBJECT:Title

Discussion and Possible Direction: Design Parameters for the Professional Design of an Outdoor Pool to be Constructed at the Aquatic Center (Jason Hart)

Body

FUNDING SOURCE:

Capital Improvement Plan - General Fund

PURPOSE:

Discussion and possible direction regarding the design parameters to be included in a Request for Statement of Qualifications for Professional Design Services for the Aquatic Center Outdoor Pool Project.

BACKGROUND:

The Aquatic Center was originally built in 1991. As the community has grown, the use of the indoor pool has also increased. The need for an outdoor pool to accommodate this increasing demand has become apparent.

The existing space at the Aquatic Center allows the City to construct an outdoor pool without the need to purchase land, construct restrooms and lockers or otherwise pay for the amenities that are needed for a community pool.  The construction of an outdoor pool at this location is much more cost effective than an outdoor pool constructed at an alternate location.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

The construction of an outdoor pool at the Aquatic Center will help ease the burden on the lone current indoor pool. The outdoor pool will provide additional options for the community for lap swimming, fitness classes, free swim, and other activities hosted by the Park and Recreation Department. Construction of a competition pool will also be of benefit to the current swim teams that utilize the lone indoor pool, as it will allow an environment in a pool that meets competition standards.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Funds for this project in the amount of $2.5 million are proposed in the Capital Improvement Plan, utilizing General Funds, for Fiscal Year 2025-26.
