PURPOSE:

To provide a presentation summarizing key provisions of Arizona’s Open Meeting Law (A.R.S. §§ 38_431–431.09).

BACKGROUND:

All fifty states have enacted some type of legislation providing the public with a statutory right to openness in government.  Arizona enacted its Open Meeting Law in 1962 with the purpose of maximizing public access to the governmental process.  Open Meeting Law regulates everything from providing notice of a meeting and the contents of the agenda to what may be discussed during an executive session.

Per Council’s request, this presentation will address the foundations of what constitutes a meeting as defined by Open Meeting Law; the legal requirements for notice, agenda, and minutes; and executive sessions.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

To provide educational opportunities to deepen residents’ knowledge of governmental processes, foster civic engagement and build trust.
