COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

TO:                                          Honorable Mayor and Council

FROM:                     Peter Pilafas, Fire Chief

SUBJECT:Title

Action: Resolution No. 25-3813 Approving the Agreement with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality for the Hazardous Material Emergency Preparedness Grant Program (Chief Pilafas)

Body

FUNDING SOURCE:

Grant

PURPOSE:

To consider adopting a resolution approving Agreement No. EV25-0034 with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) for the Hazardous Material Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) grant program to assist in the development and improvement of training and planning program.

BACKGROUND:

ADEQ enhances community safety by offering financial support through the HMEP. This program is designed to fund Fire Departments across Arizona for Hazardous Material Training. Through routine awards, the HMEP enables departments to send their personnel to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Hazardous Materials Conference. Attending this annual conference offers fire service professionals invaluable opportunities to engage in advanced training sessions, workshops, and informational seminars on hazardous materials management and emergency response. By participating in the IAFC conference, members gain access to cutting-edge knowledge, best practices, and innovative techniques in hazardous materials handling, which they can then bring back to their departments. This enhanced training strengthens their communities' preparedness and safety in hazardous materials incidents.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

This grant funding will enable the Fire Department to send members of the Hazardous Materials Team to the 2025 IAFC Conference to enhance hazardous materials training within the Fire Department.

FISCAL IMPACT:

ADEQ shall reimburse Lake Havasu City for the attendance to the IAFC Hazardous Materials Conference and completion of training activities in 2025, not to exceed $4,800.
