PURPOSE:

To consider adopting a resolution prioritizing affordable housing and urging the Arizona State Legislature to address the impacts of short-term rentals on the housing supply.

BACKGROUND:

The housing affordability issues in our community and across Arizona is exacerbated by the proliferation of short-term and vacation rentals (“STRs”).  The increasing number of STRs has significantly reduced the availability of long-term housing options for our residents.  Short-term and vacation rental proliferation has led to a severe housing shortage and affordability issue in Arizona, which in turn impacts the public health, safety, and welfare of our communities.

The City of Sedona recently passed an emergency measure to take steps to address this issue and to return local regulatory control of STRs to cities and towns.  Sedona urges other communities to join in a coordinated effort to make a substantial difference in mitigating this crisis.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

Prioritizing affordable housing in Lake Havasu City to create safe, decent, and affordable housing opportunities for all community members.
