COUNCIL COMMUNICATION

TO:                                          Honorable Mayor and Council

FROM:                     Gabby Vera, Parks and Recreation Director

SUBJECT:Title

Adopt Resolution No. 24-3775 Ratifying the Submission of a Parks and Recreation Workforce Development Community Practice Grant Application to the National Recreation and Park Association for Youth Workforce Development Programming (Gabby Vera)

Body

FUNDING SOURCE:

Grant

PURPOSE:

To adopt a resolution ratifying the submission of a grant application to the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Community of Practice (CoP) program.

BACKGROUND:

The NRPA CoP program is a funded opportunity for rural agencies that currently provide workforce development programming through their out-of-school time services to youth. Funding provided through the NRPA Youth Workforce Development Program will enhance the Havasu Youth Advisory Council (HYAC). Goals include equipping youth with the skills needed for the modern workforce, fostering a sense of civic responsibility, and encouraging entrepreneurial thinking. By bridging the gap between education and practical experience, participants will be prepared for successful careers and active community involvement.

NRPA is the leading not-for-profit organization dedicated to building strong, vibrant and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation.

COMMUNITY IMPACT:

The CoP will allow for agencies to connect and learn from peers, problem-solve challenges, and receive assistance from cohort peers and industry experts. From August 2024 to July 2025, the CoP will guide a small cohort through community engagement and workforce development expansion journeys, while centering strategies and approaches to ensure programming benefits a diverse network of rural youth.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The current budget for HYAC is $4,000. This one-time award of $20,000 will help develop the program, purchase materials, and determine metrics that can measure the effectiveness of HYAC in increasing leadership.
